{"id":1823,"date":"2012-11-12T13:11:27","date_gmt":"2012-11-12T18:11:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/collectiveinquiry.com\/?p=1823"},"modified":"2012-11-12T13:18:36","modified_gmt":"2012-11-12T18:18:36","slug":"a-bite-of-humble-pie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/collectiveinquiry.com\/?p=1823","title":{"rendered":"A Bite of Humble Pie"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/collectiveinquiry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/MH900182705.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2481\" src=\"https:\/\/collectiveinquiry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/MH900182705-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/collectiveinquiry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/MH900182705-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/collectiveinquiry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/MH900182705.jpg 321w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>So there I was waiting in the subway for my train to arrive. \u00a0This was only my first day of navigating the NYC subway by myself. \u00a0As the friend I was visiting instructed me, &#8220;Put your train face on and look like you know what you are doing.&#8221; \u00a0So I turned my &#8220;Suzy Sunshine&#8221; off and my typical smile transformed into a &#8220;what are you lookin&#8217; at!&#8221;\u00a0grimace.<\/p>\n<p>Well apparently I was much better at blending in than I ever thought. \u00a0Like I said, I was waiting for my next train to arrive when this family (obviously tourists, unlike me) approached me with a train map and a puzzled look on their faces. \u00a0&#8220;Do you know if this train will take me downtown?&#8221; \u00a0the dads asked. \u00a0Although part of me had a pure intention to actually help them find the right train, my grimaced alter-ego overtook my being and pridefully and\u00a0confidently offered up the &#8220;correct&#8221; directions.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, there was the train, we all boarded and the family happened to sit across from me. \u00a0Just as I was feeling pretty awesome about my\u00a0new-found\u00a0subway navigation skills, \u00a0I notice the dad asking another lady on the train for her opinion as to whether or not they were going the right way for downtown. \u00a0Unlike me, this lady was a true New Yorker and actually gave them the real inside scoop on exactly how to get where they were trying to go. \u00a0Turns out I was wrong. \u00a0And there I was, sitting <em>directly<\/em> <em>across<\/em> from this family, embarrassed. \u00a0Let&#8217;s just say my &#8220;what are you lookin&#8217; at!&#8221; grimace quickly faded into a shameful look-away-and-pretend-like-I-did-not-see-that.<\/p>\n<p>It is funny what happens in life that reminds us to be humble. \u00a0I don&#8217;t know about you, but I can often get caught up in trying to be better or smarter and then end up in a situation that highlights the lack of humbleness and humility I was working from. \u00a0Perhaps I am sometimes afraid to show my true colors, to be vulnerable, to show my real self. \u00a0Maybe my cocky &#8220;train face&#8221; attitude is a defense mechanism that is trying to protect the softer &#8220;Suzy Sunshine&#8221; within me.<\/p>\n<p>So, I invite you to come over on this lovely Monday afternoon and share a piece of humble pie with me. \u00a0Fresh out of the oven!
